Whitney is a new band comprised of guitarist Max Kakacek (ex-Smith Westerns) and drummer Julien Ehrlich (ex-Unknown Mortal Orchestra) who sings on the record. I’ve never heard a voice quite like Julien’s. He sings with a strangely addicting falsetto that hooked me right away. Whitney formed from therapeutic writing sessions during one of Chicago’s harshest winters which resulted in their debut album, Light Upon the Lake. They’ve shared the second single, ‘Golden Days’, which is accompanied by a self-made music video.
In explaining the name Whitney Max Kakacek says, “We were both writing as this one character, and whenever we were stuck, we’d ask, ‘What would Whitney do in this situation?’ We personified the band name into this person, and that helped a lot. We wrote the record as though one person were playing everything. We purposefully didn’t add a lot of parts and didn’t bother making everything perfect, because the character we had in mind wouldn’t do that.”
Light Upon the Lake was recorded with Foxygen frontman and longtime friend, Jonathan Rado, which will be released June 3rd on Secretly Canadian.
