Currents, for existing Tame Impala fans, will be the proverbial line drawn in the sand. Cross the line and follow Kevin on his journey into new sonic territory or stay on the other side of the line and let Tame Impala, as you knew it, go on without you. Before that decision is made give the album a few listens with an open mind and forget almost everything you knew about Tame Impala. Understand that most artists need to explore and break new grounds. They hate being pigeon holed and one trick ponies, and who can blame them?
Looking back, Lonerism was the first hint that Kevin Parker wanted more out of the Tame Impala sound he so carefully crafted. It had just enough psych rock from Innerspeaker mixed with newer elements of psych pop and electronic dance music to act as a stepping stone for what would come next. Few could have predicted just how far that next step was going to be, which is why Currents will be a significant turning point for Tame Impala and fans.
To help understand and gain a better perspective on why the shift in sound is so great, there are a couple of articles by Stereogum (here and here) and a brief interview/piece from The Guardian that I recommend reading before you make any rash decisions. One particularly entertaining part from the Guardian interview is where Kevin explains a profound emotional experience he had listening to the The Bee Gees while he was being driven around LA on mushrooms and coke.
Quote from The Guardian…
“I was in LA a few years ago and for some reason we’d taken mushrooms, it must have been the end of our tour,” he recalls. “I was coked up as well, and a friend was driving us around LA in this old sedan. He was playing the Bee Gees and it had the most profound emotional effect. I’m getting butterflies just thinking about it. I was listening to Staying Alive, a song I’ve heard all my life. At that moment it had this really emotive, melancholy feel to it. The beat felt overwhelmingly strong and, at that moment, it sounded pretty psychedelic. It moved me, and that’s what I always want out of psych music. I want it to transport me.”
Take that experience, combine it with his breakup with Melody Prochet of Melody’s Echo Chamber and everything else that comes with going from relative obscurity to indie music blog superhero and you start to understand how and why Kevin Parker wanted Tame Impala to evolve into what became Currents. He, himself, is growing, evolving and learning as he makes his way through life. His music will reflect that, it has to.
As a result, Kevin Parker has delivered one of the most impressive albums that I’ve heard in a long time. More than anything, this record will leaves you anxiously waiting to hear what Kevin Parker will come up with next. The anticipation of what would follow Lonerism is doubled with what will follow Currents. He’s less predictable than ever before and has proven he’s capable of almost completely changing his sound to produce amazing results.
