I discovered Alain Johannes through my obsession with Queens of the Stone Age. Which eventually led me to Desert Sessions. Which led me to the song ‘Making a Cross’, which then made me recognize his influence all over QOTSA records. I haven’t heard another musician that sounds like Alain. He’s capable of making the most beautiful, tug at your heart strings, songs and also the most menacing sounding songs I’ve heard (and everything in between). Not menacing in a Death Metal sort of way, but menacing in a hard to explain, hit your insides, kind of way. And that’s exactly what his new album Fragments and Wholes, Vol. 1 sounds like to me. You have songs like Welcome, Where Angels Crawl and others on the beautiful side and songs like Jack of Wands and Let It Gnaw on the menacing/heavy side. The entire album is killer and is highly recommended.
